Thor's Hammer pendants were very common during the Viking Age. Thor was one of the most popular of the gods. Many stories tell of one giant or another trying to bring down the gods and Thor ultimately stops him. This makes Thor the protector of the gods and mortals alike. His most prized possession was his mighty hammer Mjolnir. When thrown at a target Mjolnir would magically return to him. It is Thor's powerful hammer that becomes the symbol of Thor and is worn as a symbol of protection.

Thor's Hammer 1. One of the most powerful of the Norse gods was Thor, god of thunder. His followers wore a pendant in the shape of his mighty hammer named “Mjolner.” This is a replica of one such hammer that is dated about 1000 AD. It was found in Denmark as part of a hoard near Roskilde. It is currently on display at the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark. The reproduction is made with sterling (.925) silver and is approximately 1 1/4” high and 1 1/2” wide and weighs about 4.3 grams.

Mammen Hammer by Paul Borda. This type of carving is named for an axe that was found in Mammen, Norway. It was popular around the year 1000 AD. It is about 100 years older than the Urnes style. The design on this hammer shows a depiction of Thor in a traditional pose of holding his beard with the two goats that pull his chariot. Pendant is pewter and is 1.75" tall and 1.75" wide.

Urnes Hammer by Paul Borda. The most famous example of this type of carving is a stave church originally located in Urnes, Norway. The design is known for being lacy and fluid with lots of negative space. It was the last pure Viking style before Christianity arrived and its influence transformed Scandinavian art work. Pendant is pewter and is 2.5" tall and 1.75" wide.
